[Movie]:Kui Hua Duo Duo (The Sunflowers)
[Directed by]:Wang Baomin
[Acted by]:Wang Minjie, SunQian, Wu Yingying, Yang Yi
[Length]:98 min.( The 35 mm film project)
[Brief remarks]:
If only the guitar is there, and Yang Yi’s still singing, we can always have stories, and hear the poet’s singing in his travel. We experience, we listen, and we are on the road.
Kui Hua Duo Duo (The Sunflowers) is a Western China style movie of folk songs. The famous folk song singer Yang Yi plays the role of “a rambling singer” in the movie. In the path made of his songs, the movie is presented in a way of changing scenes of sad and amorous dreams. Yang Yi appears from the visual angle of an insider. He steps into the dazzling sun of the weird sunflower field, and begins to tell a specious story.
A music fan won’t ever miss Yang Yi’s singing with the innermost true feelings accompanied by a guitar.
An art pursuer would be easily taken to the sunshine of Alpine in Van Gogh’s paintings, by the sparkling sunflower field at the foot of Yinshan Mountain.
A movie lover perceives warmth and sadness from the movie, which is full of author’s introspection, yet naturally expressed.
In this prosaic folk song movie, Wang Baomin, the director, combines his excellent cinematography and the narrative successfully, which is a rare case among China’s art films. The director, holding a master degree on cinematics, has reflected some of the traits of New Wave, always pointing out the distance between the audience and the pictures throughout the movie, just like what he says: “I think film is an art of fiction, a complicated way of expression, and it can never be a good one when it totally obeys the reality.” Under the sound of Yang Yi’s harmonica, the hero leads the audience into the core of the story, quietly and slowly, to make them feel vitality of life and the flowing of time, simply through the visual objects in the lens itself. The director uses vision to found the meaning of just the visual objects in the lens.
Kui Hua Duo Duo (The Sunflowers) is a prose-natured movie about the earth and the man. The five chapters of Yang Yi’s singing gradually spread out his growing mental process and his inner world. Actually this is indeed a psychological story; however, the application of suspense in relation to the narrative skill makes the story to go on lively and smoothly, and the old scar and secret of the hero is unveiled by layers and layers. And the complicated and secretive relationships between the hero and heroine, both in fantasy and in reality, are also untangled only at the very end of the story.
Kui Hua Duo Duo (The Sunflowers) Interview Forum is a part of the series of video present activities organized by Zhu Qizhan Art Museum, and is an opportunity of dialogue and exchange between media, audience and the director. Our objective is, through this effort, to enable the audience to see more valuable Chinese movies, to push forward China’s film industry and the development of the individual movies, and to let movies with thoughts get more chances of exposure to and understanding from the audience. However, what we also want to say is, the sole participation of the museum can not make it. To make the dream come true, every supporters of Chinese film industry shall extend their help and encouragement too. This presenting of Kui Hua Duo Duo (The Sunflowers) organized by Zhu Qizhan Art Museum, is the first public broadcasting of this movie in East China. We are honored to have invited the director, Wang Baomin, here to meet the media and the audience and talk about the movie and the development of China’s individual visual pieces as well.
